Tips For Betting On Politics

As we discussed on our homepage, futures are one of the main bet types you’re going to find. But the issue with political betting is that you don’t want to look too far ahead. For instance, conventional wisdom, and practically all Presidential election betting lines for 2020, say that Trump will win his parties nomination and will more than likely win the Presidency in 2020. However, it really is too early to tell. Once the Democrats name their nomination, odds for 2020 will get a lot closer depending on the candidate.

And think about all the pundits that said Trump has zero shot at doing well in the 2016 election. Meanwhile, he is the current President and the favorite for winning the Republican primary election in 2020.

Don’t Seek Leverage

With many sites on our network, we’re always recommending that gamblers seek to leverage their bets. By leveraging, one can place a bet on a newer, better line and ultimately end up winning money, either way, the outcome lands. However, leveraging in the political realm doesn’t offer any sort of advantage or upside.

No matter what, you’re only looking at a single winning bet (outside of props), and to the extent you bet extra on politician B after it looks like your initial bet A is failing, all you’re doing is putting up more capital that will take you too large a risk to recoup a decent reward. So when betting politics, you want to take your time and make one solid main bet (again, outside of props). Leveraging here just wastes money.

Don’t Chase Long-shots

While there might be something to say for taking a Boston Red Sox team down 0-3 to the Yankees, those comeback kids aren’t really present in the political world. For the past few decades, polling data has been frighteningly accurate, and few if any politicians have actually come from behind to pull off a big upset. Outside of smaller elections, like a Representatives seat lost by Eric Cantor in what proved to be an upset, this type of thing usually doesn’t happen.

When the polls say so-and-so is leading by 3 points or more, then that’s the bet to take. Only when it’s within 2 points or closer will it typically swing either way. So if you’re thinking about taking a bet just because you’re getting great odds, you may want to think about it a little harder and instead go with a politician who’s showing more likely to win.
